Zedcorp Building Maintainace

We had an auto-opener (Merlin MT800) for our garage door installed about 3.5 years ago. Recently, there was a minor issue with it. Zedcorp charged $352 for repair and provided an interesting comment "Very old system, controls not functioning properly, extensive repairs for over $1000 will be required in the future".
We were concerned about this comment but never received a proper explanation on how a 3.5 years old system was considered very old and how a repair of over $1000 would be required when even a brand new installation would cost around $500 or less
